On Mental Health & Asking For Help

Living boldly requires vulnerability, connectivity, and support. October 2nd – 8th is Mental Illness Awareness Week. Countless research studies over the years have found that people consistently and grossly underestimate how much others appreciate being reached out to for support. Although conducted across different contexts, the fact that humans feel valuable and fulfilled from helping others remains constant. Living boldly requires embracing the statement: “Don’t go it alone.” Being bold means asking for help when we need it and remembering that seeking support can create value for others as well.

Read on for this month’s roundup on mental health and asking for help.

Wishing you an October where you won’t hesitate to seek the support you need to live, lead, and love boldly.

One Insight

Human’s feel valuable and fulfilled from helping others. Remember that asking for support during trials and challenges isn’t as burdensome as we might imagine. It is quite the opposite. It can add meaning to the lives of those that support you. Thank you to Adam Grant for sharing this important reminder.

One Tool, Technique or Tactic To Try

When asking for help, try a better question.

Instead of asking yourself: “I wonder how inconvenienced they may feel?” try flipping the script and asking: “I wonder how valued, trusted, and useful they may feel?”

One Question

Ask yourself:

Which relationships in my life could be strengthened by being more vulnerable and asking for support when I need it?

Let’s go live boldly!
